Services

APPOINTMENT
Gateway Veterinary Services operates an open hospital. This means that our team welcomes owners to be with their animals during any medical procedure, whether a simple vaccination or a complex surgery as long as it in the best interests of the animal. Please ask if it something you would like to be a part of and we will do our best to make this happen for you. Sometimes it can cause stress to the pet if the owner is nearby but cannot hold them, and in these cases we will have the procedure take place in the next room.
Appointments
Our appointment book is computerized which allows us to efficiently make appointments for you and your pet. Our receptionists and team will attempt to accommodate all requests to the best of our ability. Emergencies are accepted anytime our clinic is open. If you feel you have an emergency with your pet, please call us or come to the hospital immediately. If possible it is best to call before coming in so that a staff member can advise you on your particular emergency.
Emergency and Urgent Care
We have a veterinarian and personnel on duty 7 days a week who are trained and equipped to handle any urgent care your pet has. Usually, an emergency team consists of at least one veterinarian and several technicians working together to save a pet’s life. Emergencies can be things such a snail bait poisoning, hit by a car, and chocolate ingestion. If you ever feel that your pet needs emergency treatment do not hesitate to call or come in immediately. If possible it is best to call before coming in so that a team member can advise you on your particular emergency.

We are also available for urgent care when the condition is not life-threatening, but you feel your pet needs to be seen before you are able to get an appointment. Our veterinarians will work to “squeeze” you in between scheduled appointments. When you arrive, our receptionists will be able to give you an estimate on how long you may have to wait in order to be seen.

Companion Animal Surgery

At Gateway Vet Services, we perform many elective surgeries as well as non-elective or emergency surgeries. Elective surgeries include; spay, neuter, dental prophylaxis, as well as mass removal, etc. Declaws (onychectomy), as well as tail docking (amputation of the tail near the base), are forms of cosmetic or non-medical elective surgeries that are still performed but are being strongly discouraged if at all possible. Please read this article published by the Canadian Vet Journal for more information. These elective surgeries as well as ear cropping have been deemed inhumane and are illegal in many countries as well as parts of Canada. This is currently a hot topic of discussion in Saskatchewan as well.

Elective surgeries are performed in the morning on weekdays. These need to be booked in advance as there are precautionary measures and requirements for different types of surgeries. When you book an appointment for surgery, there is important information that we need to relay to you prior to you dropping off your pet and signing the consent forms. For this reason, we ask that you provide your email address so that we can send you this information for perusal at your convenience.

Most of our surgeries go home the same day. If there has been complications or we need to keep your pet overnight, this will be discussed with you at the time of booking or after surgery.

Companion Animal Retail

We stock everything for your pets’ needs from food, treats, toys, beds, grooming supplies, to leashes, collars and poop disposal products.

We also stock a retail nutraceutical line from Omega Alpha and as well as other companies, providing you with a natural approach to medicine. A nutraceutical is a dietary or herbal supplement. By using whole balanced foods and herbal additives we have been able to aid in the control or control many types of ailments common to pets. These products also work well in conjunction with conventional medical treatments.

Equine Services

At Gateway Vet Services, we offer a wide variety of equine services ranging from retail products to medicine and surgery, focusing on preventative care and maintenance.

Equine Medicine

We believe in keeping up-to-date in the world of equine medicine and believe in the benefits of alternative therapies such as regular chiropractics, herbal therapies, and therapeutic laser. We have found that the right blend of conventional medicine with alternative therapies can have synergistic healing properties.

Regular horse maintenance such as vaccines, deworming, oral balance and float, chiropractic adjustments, and more, are very important to your horse’s longevity. Every horse is different and may require a different amount of maintenance. It is important to have your horse checked out by a veterinarian routinely to prevent disease with early detection.

We have breakthrough information regarding equine deworming and parasite resistance. The world of equine dewormers is very limited and more and more resistant parasites are being found. Regular fecal egg count screening is becoming more important in parasite prevention and control. We can tell you how much and what type of parasites your horse has, and treat as needed with a small stool sample. To check out the article in Horse Canada by Dr. Ela Misuno, DVM click here!

Equine Surgery

Equine surgery is anything that requires sedation to perform. We have a consent form that needs to be signed prior to any sedation. If your horse has ever undergone sedation and not reacted well, or was sensitive to any drug, please make your attending veterinarian aware of this prior to the sedation. Some horses take more sedation than others and this is an important factor in getting the correct dose for your horse.

We routinely perform equine balance and floats and our veterinarians have experience in dealing with many oral lesions. We use a Powerfloat to create a balanced mouth in a shorter time than hand floating. It is very important that every mouth is assessed on an individual basis to prevent and correct malocclusions.

We are able to handle routine surgeries here in clinic, but any extensive or abdominal surgeries will be referred to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Medical Centre. We can assist you in sending the referral and arranging the reservation with the clinician best suited to your needs and availability.

Equine Retail

At Gateway Vet Services, we are comfortable working with all types of food-producing animals. We regularly consult cattle, sheep, and goat producers. Food Producing Animal Medicine

Gateway Vet Services provides consultation to many livestock producers. Through examination, consultation, and diagnostics we can help you treat and prevent many common ailments and diseases, resulting in higher production from your herd. Increased production means an increase in revenue per animal for you.

A good herd health program includes proper disease prevention, breeding assessment, nutrition, parasite control, and housing. Our staff can help you to determine where there are areas that we can help improve your current herd health program. Sometimes it is the small details that can make the biggest difference in your bottom line. If you are looking to stand out in the crowd, call Gateway Vet Services today!

Food Producing Animal Surgery

A wide variety of surgeries are performed on food-producing animals, though most are reproductive-related (caesaerian sections, uterine or vaginal prolapse, etc). Another common ailment we see for surgery are abscesses or masses and lumps.

Large animals rarely have to be put under a general anesthetic as a local anesthetic provides full relief from pain and discomfort during surgery. Any food-producing animal that requires a full general anesthetic and is over 500lbs is at a higher risk of respiratory distress and would require surgery at a specialized facility. We would refer anything to the WCVM for further consultation if required.

Food Producing Animal Retail

We offer our livestock clientele retail, pharmaceuticals, as well as hardware and other equipment. We can special order any items or products that you require. If in stock at our suppliers, it can be received as early as next day.

Alternative Therapies
Therapeutic Laser Therapy

Therapeutic Laser, Cold Laser, or Low Level Light Therapy is a laser that is non-surgical and non-invasive. The laser cannot be felt or seen. A red laser pointer beam is used so that you know when the laser is on, but the actual healing laser beam cannot be seen. The special wavelength type energizes cells to speed up the process of healing and repair. Sometimes people note that they feel a slight “tingling” sensation over areas of scarring or thickened tissues.

Laser therapy is used in any case where there might be irritation, inflammation, pain, swelling, surgical incisions, and much more! Documented cases of controlling arthritis, skin issues, tendon/ligament damage, decreasing healing times, speeding up open wound or incision closure, decreasing proud flesh production, pain control and muscle relaxation, body detoxification in organs, and the list goes on!

Therapeutic laser is a great addition to many treatment protocols and may provide extra comfort to your animal during disease or healing. Ask us today about our discounted laser treatment packages!

Nutrition & Herbal Remedies/Supplements

We use a wide variety of herbal treatments to aid in the prevention and control of disease. A nutraceutical is a great first step in treating many conditions and is gentle on the body. We prefer to use a natural or herbal based treatment first to control certain conditions before a pharmaceutical depending on the condition and severity.

Omega Alpha produces a large variety of equine and companion animal products used to help with liver, kidney, respiratory, hormonal, digestive, skin, and supplement derived issues. There are cleanses and supplements that can aid in the prevention and control many diseases from heaves to ulcers, anxiety, fly control and hair coat to name a few. We currently stock the most popular and broad spectrum products and can special order as well.

Leba III is another herbal product we use a lot to control periodontal disease and tartar. It is a proven treatment to dissolve tartar as a preventative and maintenance. It does not heal the tooth related issues. These need to be addressed surgically with a dental cleaning to create a healthy mouth. Leba III the is the toothbrush, toothpaste and floss for their mouths when used as directed!

If you have any questions about products in our clinic, never hesitate to discuss with our staff and they would be glad to assist you, that you understand the importance of the products and their role in your animal’s overall health!
