The death of a pet is one of the most difficult things you as a pet owner deal with. Pets become family and therefore decisions like euthanasia are made even more hard to deal with.
The saddest part about owning a pet is that they will not live as long as us and eventually hard decisions or loss will be felt. An important thing to remember is that your pet will forever live on in your pictures, memories of good times, and in your heart.
Find a way to memorialize your pet in a healthy way that can help you and your family move past thesadness and focus on the happy times with your pet. Plant a tree in their name, frame your favourite picture, or donate to a cause in their name (University or research), make your family a part of this decision and process. Try not to have it focus on their death, but their life that they had and how they brought you joy. This will help to heal all hearts involved.
Your vet should always be a person of trust that you can go to when your pet is near the end. They can help you assess your pet's quality of life. Ultimately it is your decision; but when making the decision, it is important to find out if you are keeping your pet alive for them or for yourself. Sometimes we selfishly decide that it is not time because we are afraid of parting with them. You should always put your pet's welfare first in these decisions. Step back and look at the changes in appetite, activity, and appearance. Be non-biased and objective.
Is your pet telling you it is time?
